Returning to the U.K. Midday, we knew we would not want to start an 8 hour train ride to get all the way to St Andrews so we decided to stop over in York. This is the city with Viking and Roman relics side-but-side and is second to London in the number of visitors.
One of the biggest attractions for us was York Minster Cathedral. It is the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps. It houses the largest collection of medieval stained glasin Britain, with 60 - 70 % of the glass. It was interesting to hear how the glass was taken out during the bombing raids of WW II.
This site began as a wooden chapel in the year 627 when King Edwin was baptized as a result of his wife's influence. There have been several structures on this site, but the current one was begun in 1220 and completed 250 years later!
