Sometimes we tell our boys that we are teaching them "how to be men". They usually respond to this the way one might expect! Then comes the explanation that they do not want to grow up to be lazy or irresponsible, but rather want to be men of integrity and good character.
Being in St Andrews has presented some new opportunities for "Training Camp." Even though we are living in a home that is a residence of a family, the boys do not have many "things" of their own. We didn't bring Legos, we only brought a couple of books, and they have some pens and blank paper. This can keep them occupied for a while after the sun goes down (no TV here, though we do have access to a UK dvd player), but inevitably there are times when they need some direction on how to constructively fill their time. Often, as it has turned out, this is around dinner preparation time. Spontaneously, I have hit upon a new "men in training" opportunity that gives them each some time without brother within hitting distance. Most nights that we eat at the house, which is most nights, one boy helps me prepare dinner and one boy helps me clean up. The next night, they switch roles. Not only am I getting some one-on-one time with each boy, but they are learning valuable skills about finding their way around the kitchen. Of course, when I tell them that their future wives will thank me one day, they pretend to throw-up! I love walking through life with my little men.😀
